Talley and O’Connor

Talley and O’Connor’s Clinical Examination is the book by which countless doctors have learnt to physically examine patients. It is a required text for MBBS, and is a very highly regarded resource. It is, however, written a little (how does one say…) casually.

Of note is the introduction to the Digital Rectal Examination - the art of palpating the interior walls of one’s rectum with one’s first finger. In beginning the paragraph, the text states, “Now the time for action has come.” The chapter goes on to suggest that asking the patient to “breathe in and out, quietly through the mouth” may aid in distracting the patient from the forthcoming intrusion.

Talley and O’Connor. What men!

This note got me into Medicine. Tim Minchin, a favourite comedian of mine, gave this to Lily to give to me. I desperately wanted to go to his shows, but they were the two nights before GAMSAT (the biggest exam of my life). Lily explained this to Tim, and thus he wrote me a good luck note.

Workload in Year 1

Usually, there are approx 30 contact hours per week. Students should anticipate spending at least an additional 30 hours per week on self directed learning. It should be noted that the program is full-time and with a heavy workload.

A typical student timetable runs full-time from 8.00am to 6.00pm, Monday to Friday (this includes two hour blocks for self directed study).

NB: It is compulsory to attend all classes.

F*ckkkkkkkkkkk. Employment? Que~!?

Got my official “Welcome to Medicine” letter, yesterday.

Didn’t say much that I didn’t already know. But it was really nice to receive written, snail-mail confirmation that I’ve been accepted. Especially as I got accepted into the St Lucia cohort, not Ipswich!

The only interesting thing was that it told us the current locations of all the clinical schools, and we have to sign to say we accept all financial responsibility associated with living/working at the clinical school we are assigned.

Anyway, glad to have got it. Med, here I come!
